Daring entrepreneurs inject a shot of realism at Cyprus commerce and industry

Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism demonstrates high appreciation for events that promote and develop entrepreneurship in Cyprus and admits to its incapacity to stimulate young entrepreneurial minds.

entrepreneurshipIt is without a doubt the we would like to congratulate the winners of the CyEC2010 awards - Bright Future, Cynergy, InteliPhone and especially the organizers from the Science and Technology community, with special emphasis on Professor Skevos Evripidou's efforts, for engaging young engineers, technicians, scientific and academics, providing them with a window of opportunity that challenges them to:

Dare to imagine that your ideas for high tech products and services can be converted into a Successful High Tech Company.

Undoubtedly we also recognize the valuable insights extracted from the words of Minister Paschalides speech, at the award ceremony,

"Today, entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial innovation constitute the most fundamental components of the most competitive economies, with the main requirement for success being the quality and calibre of human resource. Cyprus has a wealth of creative people that we can build on".

Encouraging words, if it wasn't for the recognized difficulty of how to take advantage of this human resource, as if it we were an 'ore' from which to extract wealth.
Mr. Paschalides went on to identify that the main problem of this source of wealth, was the need of stimulation and, "that entrepreneurial young mindsets was not being encouraged by a culture friendlier to start-ups, to entrepreneurship and towards the small and medium size enterprises."

Subsequently, the minister noted that his maximum priority at the Ministry, of Commerce was the building the Science Technology Park in the area of Pentakomo. A resource center that will certainly serve well the aspirations of young scientists, academia and enterprises to use technology and research for progressing scientific knowledge.

But what exactly does that have to do with entrepreneurship?

The possibility of unperceived existence, one year tweeting for Cyprus Tourism

The tourism trade picks up on a trend and adds to the momentum

Tourism in cyprus social media"It's been one year of tweeting about Cyprus Tourism" - last week, the team supporting the twitter account celebrated the achievement with mixed feelings.

If a balance of the year were to be made - in what terms would we want to measure our performance?  How would we want to evaluate our efforts?  Would we want to apply the ROI measures typically used by media and advertising? Would we want to judge our efforts based on the number of followers? Or in terms of the celebrate riddle,  "if a tree in a forest falls and no one is there to hear it, does it actually make a sound?", were we purposeful?

As we've come to realize, our basic purpose is less about being perceived, and more about helping to bridge the gap between perceptions and realities of Cyprus Tourism. In other words, less about publicity and more focused on making accessible and visible those valuable aspects of Cyprus that make a difference in the tourism experience.  Moreover, we believe that taking appreciation of what surrounds us inversely helps us in understanding the complexities of changing realities.

We will have the opportunity to extend ourselves on these and more issues - but to start with, just a few stats. How dedicated were we during the last year?

More, at times than others,  you can judge that our dedication was in fact irregular yet consistent with our nature and our status:  actively engaged in the social web,  we like to try out new ways to interact and network, we're basically explorers of the ecosystem and evaluating how it can work for us.
Most importantly it is allowing us to set the path for our continued presence in the next year. We aim to achieve a balance between sharing those relevant news, creating a state of opinion around issues we understand to be important, and cultivating a broader interest of issues other than tourist arrivals and temperature updates.

The importance of our exercise and introspection, extends itself beyond the use of twitter, it allows for an understanding of the processes determining identity, the who and what behind the online activity. Listening, sharing and participating are essentials, but distinguishing a curator from a specialist, may be more determinant than just aiming for followers and tweeting in quantity.

You too can explore our statistics - check out the @CyprusTourism Klout analysis on the subject, although it's not the only benchmark, it's a rather good way to explore the dynamics of influence in time, not only for yourself but also for those that should be discovering you.

Do you have an impression you would like to share - let us know by commenting here or directly on the @cyprustourism twitter channel.
