What stops the proper handling of tourism in Cyprus is nine people

The blunt reality behind the productivity puzzle in Cyprus Tourism

These nine people are called the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, "The CTO has an excellent selection of experts and technocrats. Scientists in their fields, they know what they are doing. But they are absolutely and totally stopped by these nine political contributors!”, exclaims newly elected mayor of Kyrenia, Glafkos Kariolou and ex-senior officer at the CTO.

Glafkos Kariolou goes on sincerely to recognise that,  "the Board are political appointees, nominated by the parties, and many of them are in the pockets of developers and tourism companies, habitually using their post to promote, with internal complicity, “stupid idiotic seminars” taught by their friends, or just fly Business Class and stay in expensive hotels".

In the interview, Mr. Kariolou not only sheds light about his personal life but also his personal tribulations confronted by a legacy of profiteers distinguished by the disregard 'for the job' and points out that, “these nine people, in July, will go home and another nine people will replace them” – he took the CTO to court 12 times for not promoting him, and won every time – “cost the taxpayer 200,000 euros.”

All very good accounts that substantiates his personal distrust of political parties, noting that  he doesn't ‘hate’ them,” but recognizes that “They are our destruction!”

A personal account worth reading, an interview by the Cyprus Mail by Glafkos Kariolou, enlightening us all about his near future horizon, “I’m a very passionate Kyrenian,” and we wish him the best of luck in this new endeavor.
